Eucerin Aquaphor Lip Repair Lip Balms

These are one of my favourite lip products, so I really wanted to write a separate post about them! Enjoy!

Packaging/Pricing:

~4-5$ at most drugstores for 10ml (0.35fl.oz) of product. Simple reliable squeeze tube with simple design.

How to read the ingredient list:

Excellent (very beneficial ingredients, proven research)
Good (moderately beneficial ingredients, not extensive research available or just not quite outstanding properties)
OK (mostly thickeners, emulsifiers, mild preservatives, pH adjusters, all that is necessary formulation wise, but not a skincare per se)
Bad (anything that shouldn't be in a skincare product, irritants and fragrance)

Ingredients for Lip Repair:

Octyldodecanol, C18-38 Alkyl Hydroxystearoyl Stearate, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Bis-Diglyceryl Polyacyladipate-2, Panthenol, Water, Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vit E), Bisabolol, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (Vit C), Lecithin, Tocopherol (Vit E), Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vit C), Beeswax, C20-40 Alkyl Stearate, Magnesium Stearate, Magnesium Sulfate, Glyceryl Stearate, Glyceryl Oleate, Citric Acid.

Discussion:

This is honestly my "must have" skin care product. It really smooths and repairs lips. I haven't had chapped or cracked lips since I've started using it (about 2 years ago), even in the winter time. It does feel a bit thick on the lips though, so you wouldn't want to use it under lipstick or lipgloss per se. I use it as a daily overnight treatment. Plus during times when I have a cold and my lips tend to dry out, I use it 2-4 times a day.
Ingredients wise this product is brilliant. No fragrance, drying alcohols or essential oils. But lots of emollients and skin identical/repairing ingredients (octyldodecanol, glycerin, panthenol, castor oil, shea butter, lecithin etc.) and antioxidants (vitamins C and E in two forms each, plus chamomile extract/bisabolol). Everything you need to keep skin in any place of your body in its best shape.

Verdict:

Excellent! Great formulation at a great price.
5 out of 5.

Ingredients for Lip Repair + Protect:

Other: C18-38 Alkyl Hydroxystearoyl Stearate, Octyldodecanol, Glycerin, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Panthenol, Water, Polyglyceryl 3 Diisostearate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Tocopheryl Acetate, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Beeswax, C20 40 Alkyl Stearate, Magnesium Sulfate, Magnesium Stearate, BHT.

Discussion:

This is a toned down version of the Lip Repair treatment above. Unfortunately it doesn't have as many antioxidants as the original version (just vitamin E), but it does have enough emollient/repairing ingredients to keep lips moisturized. And what's more important is has broad spectrum sun protection, which is one of the most important anti-aging preventive measures you can take.
Additional side note on petrolatum/vaseline. It is completely safe for the skin (despite some unfounded rumors floating around internet). This ingredient has years of research and clinical use to back up its efficiency and safety. It is known to cause no sensitivity at all. It helps skin to recover from damage quicker, heal better and reduces inflammation. I do understand why people are scared of "harsh chemicals" in the skin care, but this one is the mildest ingredient you can find. So rest assured that you do skin only good when using petrolatum based products.
The downside of Lip Repair + Protect is its texture (rather thick). If in the original treatment I can easily overlook it, since I only use it before going to bed. But day time product should have much more elegant texture, so that you can wear it under make-up. If you are fine with using it as a lipbalm sunscreen/clear lipgloss type of product, than you are fine. It does add visible glossiness to the lips. But generally I would recommend it for no make-up days, or for those who don't wear make-up altogether.

Verdict:

Great product, but not under make-up.
4,5 out of 5.

  1. Yaaaas, I love this stuff! I use it at night too, but it gets kinda pricy. What about using regular aquaphor? Is it just as good for lips at night?

    1. Actually at one point I was considering the original ointment as an alternative, but it has much simpler formula with no antioxidants (but it will heal dry skin). So I decided to stick with the lip balm version. Also, since I use it only at night, it lasts at least 5 months for me, which is not so bad I guess price wise...
