Body Care: Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Lotion Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30

This is probably one of the most popular sunscreens on the market. It has very distinctive scent, that a lot of people associate with beach or summer vacation. So hopefully this review will be useful for you.

Packaging/Pricing:

8-12$ for 177ml (6fl.oz). Not an ideal packaging, since it features clear plastic. Keep away from the sun.
[Orignialy the product had beautiful stripy pattern inside, but due to heavy use these layers got mixed together.]

Ingredients:

Active: Avobenzone 2%, Octocrylene 5%, Oxybenzone 3%.
Other: Water, Ethylhexyl Benzoate, Glycerin, VP/Eicosene Copolymer, Cetearyl Alcohol, Disopropyl Adipate, Isopropyl Myristate, Isopropyl Palmitate, Phenethyl Benzoate, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Polyethylene, Sodium Polyacrylate, Caprylyl Glycol, Dimethicone, Coco Glucoside, Ceteth 10 Phosphate, Dicetyl Phosphate, Xanthan Gum, Disodium EDTA, Paraffin, Silk Amino Acids, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Seed Butter, Panthenol, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Leaf Juice, Carica Papaya (Papaya) Fruit Extract, Colocasia Antiquorum Root Extract, Mangifera Indica (Mango) Fruit Extract, Passiflora Incarnata Fruit Extract, Plumeria Acutifolia (Plumeria) Flower Extract, Psidium Guajava Fruit Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Fragrance.

Excellent (only beneficial ingredients, proven research)
Good (mostly beneficial, not extensive research or just not quite outstanding properties)
OK (mostly thickeners, emulsifiers, mild preservatives, pH adjusters, all that is necessary, but not a skincare per se)
Bad (irritants and anything bad that shouldn't be in a skincare, usually fragrance)

Ingredients Discussion:

This sunscreen provides broad spectrum protection from the sun. Oxybenzone and octocrylene protect from UVB rays, while avobenzone gives protection from UVA rays.
Otherwise the formulation is not that exciting. Majority of the good ingredients are only in the lower half of the ingredient list, which makes them not as effective. Also there are a number of plant extracts with questinabe properties (papaya fruit, colocasia antiquorum, plumeria flower, guave fruit, mango fruit). At the very best they have mild antioxidant properties. However, more probable they can irritate skin, making this product not suitable for sensitive skin.
Nevertheless, you do get some well known antioxidants here, like vitamins C and E. There are also several skin identical and water-binding ingredients in this product to keep skin nourished and well hydrated (glycerin, shea and mango butters, silk amino acids, panthenol, aloe vera juice).
This formulation features fragrance. Judging by the strength of the scent, I would say it is present in a quite substantial amount. So again, not a good choice for sensitive skin.

Consumer Thoughts:

The good: I like how moisturizing this sunscreen feels on the skin (since I am not a fan of so called "dry touch" sunscreens). If you, like me, do not like the skin parching effect the scourching sun has on the skin, you will appreciate emollient sunscreens (though if your skin sweats a lot, you may not like it). This product is easy to spread and it absorbs reasonably quick.
The bad: The scent is quite strong, which means it irritates the skin to sertain extent. Also the fragrance being so strong, makes it hard to wear perfume at the same time. The scent is not everybody's cup of tea as well. Certainly I didn't like at first. It is quite fruity-floral bubblegum like. In my opinion thi sunscreen is a better choice for the beach (where you wouldn't wear perfume anyway), rather then the city.

Verdict:

Not an excellent choice, but not the worst one either. Definitely budget friendly. I liked the moisturized feeling it provided. Didn't care for the scent. It is a little bit too heavy on potentialy irritating plant extracts (and not heavy enough on good ingredients). But it gives a broad spectrum sun protection.

3,5 out of 5.
